Anomaly Vineyards

A Berkeley, California transplant's view of becoming an Accidental Vintner.

Serendipity

When the winery building was finally completed in 2002, we began looking for a parttime Assistant Winemaker to help with the winery operations. One day a fellow drove down our road and stopped me asking if I knew where Anomaly was. I pointed at our building at the end of the road and asked if I could help. He told me he was interested in the Assistant Winemaker position we had advertised. It turned out that he lived on a property just up the way from us and he been there the past two years. Somehow, we had never crossed paths before. After meeting us and our winemaker, we felt it would be a great fit and he joined our little "team." Fast forward 3 years and 3 harvests and, to our saddened ears, he told us he was taking a fulltime position at another wonderful winery. We understood but told him in no uncertain terms that "he was our future." Over the next year, each time we ran into him, we reminded him of that. We didn't have any idea when or how that would occur, or if in fact it ever would, but the running 'joke' continued. Later this week, I'll tell you how "we asked for his hand" or, as he would describe it, arranged for a trade as if this were the major leagues! Until then, Chantico.
